Growing Herbs in Your Apartment
Monday, February 8th, 2010No matter where you live, you can have your own herb garden and reap the many benefits of being an herb gardener. In my first apartment, I started slowly with a couple of herb plants in containers mixed in with a couple of blossoms on my front stoop—just your basic kitchen necessities like basil, oregano and parsley.
I then added some herb plants inside my apartment. Huddled around the only southern facing window in the place were a number of other little herbs like lemongrass and lavender, which smelled awesome together, and to those I added my outdoor herb plants when winter came..
When I lived in an urban high rise I had a balcony that was totally fenced in by a largegrate—which also put my entire balcony in shade almost all day long. So I constructed a flower bed made from chicken wire, leaves, newspaper, pine needles, peat and sod to hang outside the grate and I filled it with my kitchen herbs, plus some chamomile and other flowering plants and some cascading vines. It looked fantastic, but needed to be watered too frequently.
You can apply some of these same ideas in your apartment herb garden.
Evaluate your room to determine where you could grow your herbs—do you have a stoop, front porch, balcony, deck, window or anywhere else that you could put your herbs? Do not believe that you need some big elaborate space either. Did you know that a number of herbs can grow in little places? For example, you can raise chives for your next baked potato in a container about the size of an espresso cup—provided it has enough drainage.
The next factor to consider is your lighting. The type, quality and amount of sun your herbs get is hugely important. Without the right amount of sunlight your plants won’t grow. I lived in a cramped little apartment in the city where I only had two windows. Because one of them faced east (not enough sun) I started my herb garden in the bathroom. I actually think it worked out quite well, because the herbs really seemed to benefit from the moisture and steam in the bathroom.
Now that you know where you are going to begin your herb garden and you have determined what kind of light you’ll have, such as the quality, type and amount of light you will have, you are ready to begin picking your herb. I could go on for days about which herbs to select, but the bottom-line comes down to how you plan to use the herb plants. Are you looking to raise culinary herbs, florals, first-aid or healing herb plants? Maybe you’re looking for the right ingredients for your lotions or shampoos. For just about every need you have, there’s an plant out there with your name on it. Growing Chamomile
Monday, February 8th, 2010Next time you are a little upset or on edge, try some chamomile tea. The soothing begins as soon as you drink the delicate flavor, and the chemical compounds within the tea will have you feeling better by the end of your first cup.
There are two main types of chamomile for you to select from. They are similar in function, but not in appearance, so be sure you’re getting the right chamomile for your needs.
You can try German chamomile for several different things ranging from teas to lotions. The combination of this herb’s woody, apple smell and daisy-like appearance will cheer up any room.
German chamomile is self-seeding, which is good because it is an annual and this saves you some difficulty with planting it again and again. These seeds should be collected and you can plant more in your garden or give them as a lovely little gift to a co-worker or friend.
It wants dry conditions and lots of direct or full natural light. It will grow straight up, unlike Roman chamomile, and your German chamomile plant should grow to a height of nearly 3 feet.
The best way to grow German chamomile is to either plant the seeds in a pot inside or to sprinkle them on the ground. Regardless of whether you plant the seeds inside or outside, you don’t need to cover them because they are so tiny. The sod should be kept moist (not wet) and if you potted your German chamomile make sure you do not transplant the seedlings until they are at least 4 inches tall. If you are growing it outdoors, every four weeks throughout the growing season sow more seeds so that your harvest can be even greater. The more German chamomile you grow, the better as this herb has a low floral yield.
I haven’t seen the kind of German chamomile that is double-flowered, but I am sure it is brilliant.
Roman chamomile, which is frequently called “true chamomile” or “English chamomile” is also nice in teas to ease nervous tension. It has the same woody, apple-like smell of the German chamomile, but it is unique in that it is a creeper or ground cover rather than a bushy herb.
This herb will only grow to about 10 inches high as it creeps along the ground. The Roman chamomile will get a little taller in the summer as well as produce pretty white and yellow flowers that are similar to German chamomile but more aromatic.
The natural oil from the Roman chamomile can be used to lighten or soften your hair. Chamomile is also called manzanilla in Spain and a few kinds are used to flavor certain types of sherry.
Roman chamomile does not do as well if started from seeds, so it is best if you pick-up it or begin with a division from a friend’s plant.
If you’re a forgetful waterer, Roman chamomile is the plant for you since it is resistant to drought and will thrive for some time without water.
You may not believe this, but even though these 2 herbs look alike, taste alike and have the same name, according to the scientists, they are not related at all.
